Colleges Northumbria LECTURERS AT Northumbria University launched a ban on marking last week in protest at cuts in holidays. The lecturers' block on assessment affects 16,000 students and follows an overwhelming vote for industrial action. University managers want to reduce the Easter break by one week. There was no consultation with the union before this decision. "Our members have put up with term changes, masses of assessments and mountains of paperwork, and this is the last straw. They want their lives back," says NATFHE lecturers' union regional official Adrian Jones. Edge Hill LECTURERS AT Edge Hill College in Ormskirk near Liverpool have been protesting against cuts. Three departments face closure and nine members of staff are threatened with redundancy. Sixty members of the NATFHE lecturers' union attended a lively branch meeting on Wednesday of last week, which voted unanimously to ballot for strikes. Meanwhile students have been collecting names on petitions to keep these subjects open.
