Goss

On strike for jobs?

WORKERS AT Goss Graphic Systems in Preston have voted for industrial action to stop job losses. The firm axed 174 jobs-a quarter of its workforce-just before Christmas. But union ballots have shown huge majorities for action to win reinstatement. Every MSF member voted for industrial action, as did 87 percent of AEEU engineering union members.

Pilkington

WORKERS AT Pilkington glassmakers in St Helens, north west England, have voted for a strike against pay cuts. Members of the GMB union are set to hold a one day stoppage unless management backs down.

The St Helens workers have received a bonus payment rather than a pay rise this year. Other plants were given a basic pay increase of at least 2.5 percent. GMB organiser Charlie Leonard says, "Our members feel very strongly that they should be treated no less favourably."
