Scottish Power: Unions stop action again

by Matt Gordon

Strike action by workers at Scottish Power and Manweb has been postponed again after management made a new offer. This was due to be put to a meeting of stewards from the AEEU, GMB, and TGWU unions on Thursday of this week.

Many workers are angry about the way their union leaders are acting. 'We got a massive vote for strike action and the union officials are doing everything they can do to stop it,' said one.

UNISON members at Scottish Power have also just voted for strike action in response to management's plans. The dispute came about after Scottish Power tried to transfer the workers in Power System over to a new company.

The new offer contains a number of concessions, but workers feel the deal misses the point.

'All they have done is guarantee us some stuff we already have working for the company,' said one worker. 'This dispute started because management broke a deal guaranteeing our jobs and conditions they signed on 31 May 2000. So how can we trust them?'

A campaign has been launched to have this deal thrown out and to start the strike action.
