Members of the UCU lecturers’ union at Keele university have won a victory in their fight against threatened redundancies in the School of Economic and Management Studies (SEMS).
The UCU had planned to begin “greylisting” of the university from Friday of last week.
This would involve UCU members refusing to attend or speak at conferences at the university, apply for jobs, give lectures or write in publications edited by the university.
The dispute at Keele arose after 38 of the 67 workers in the SEMS were threatened with redundancy. Workers had previously struck against the planned cuts in February and had boycotted assessments in May.
The threat of greylisting forced management to agree to negotiate terms of voluntary severance with UCU and to undertake measures to avoid compulsory redundancies.
The UCU has reserved its right to oppose any future compulsory redundancies.
