Newport

In Newport there was a lively picket line outside the civic centre. “The laundry hasn’t been delivered, the crematorium’s shut down and we’ve closed 16 schools in the area,” one striker told Socialist Worker.

Another striker said, “We had about 50 people on our picket outside the Telford Street bin depot at 5.30am and persuaded some GMB members at the depot not to come into work.”

In some cases even workers who had been given exemptions from the strike came out anyway. One told Socialist Worker, “I’m exempted but I’ve come out on strike because I have every reason to be out – even though what I do has been classed as ‘essential work’.”

Swansea

There were lively picket lines in South Wales, reports Fred from Swansea.

“The 25-strong line at the dust depot in Swansea meant the strike was completely solid there.

“Meanwhile there were ten pickets on both the Guildhall and the County Hall, where unfortunately a few non-union members did cross the lines.

“Pickets shouted, ‘You’ll be happy enough to take the pay rise, won’t you?’ at those going in.”
