Independent publisher Serpent’s Tail is bringing MP Chris Mullin’s 1982 political thriller back into print.
The book – written in the days when Mullin was left wing – tells the tale of fictional Labour prime minister Harry Perkins, a former steel worker.
Perkins finds his plans to dismantle US bases and confront big finance blocked at every turn by the secret services, press barons and worse.
Despite its author’s later political trajectory, the story remains an engrossing exploration of what the ruling class might do if the left got elected.
