Teachers angry after retreat by union leaders

The NUT union’s leadership says it will not strike in June but will coordinate action with the NASUWT teaching union in the autumn.

This goes against a decision made at the NUT’s annual conference this year—and some teachers are calling for a special conference to discuss this.

Amanda, a teacher in London, told Socialist Worker that it is a “mistake” not to strike in June.

“We can’t always wait for the NASUWT,” she said. “People voted at our conference not to do that.”

Backsliding by trade union leaders meant that 10 May wasn’t on the scale of a 2.6 million-strong strike on 30 November last year.
