Cops target more black people

by Siân Ruddick

The police are 37 times more likely to stop and search black people than their white counterparts, a new report has found.

The study by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that between 2008 and 2009 the Metropolitan Police stopped 68 out of every 1,000 black people in their area.

In the West Midlands an officer is 28 times more likely to search a black person than a white person.

Meanwhile it has been revealed that an officer has been charged with 13 counts of misconduct at the Met’s specialist sex crimes department, the Sapphire unit.

Another has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Less than three years ago senior cops claimed the unit had been reformed following a series of scandals in which two serial rapists were left at large to rape and abuse hundreds of women.
