Marxism in Scotland was an invigorating day of discussion and debate. Some 150 socialists and activists from across Scotland attended the event on Saturday of last week.

Discussions focused on how to build the fight against Tory cuts, racism, Islamophobia, imperialism, women’s oppression and capitalism. Socialists from Spain and Egypt urged international unity and coordination in live link-ups.

Jesus, a trade unionist and socialist from Andalucia, spoke about the struggle in Spain and the 14 November coordinated general strikes across southern Europe.

A recurring theme was building rank and file confidence and strength to increase the pressure on union leaders for a general strike.

Sasha Callaghan, a leading disability activist, told the closing rally, “We have to fight or we will lose every time. Courage is contagious. We need a general strike to beat this government.”

Angela McCormick, an EIS union activist, summed up the mood of the day. She said, “If your trade union leaders don’t want to fight, tell them to get out of the way and let us at this government.”
