Voters were set to go to the polls this week in the Manchester Central by-election and the election for Bristol mayor. The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) is standing candidates in both.
In Manchester the candidate is Alex Davidson, vice-chair of the PCS union’s North West region. And in Bristol TUSC is standing Unite member Tom Baldwin.
TUSC has also announced its candidate for the Rotherham by-election, set for 29 November, following the resignation of Labour’s Denis MacShane for fiddling his expenses.
Teacher and NUT rep Ralph Dyson, who led a successful strike against job losses at Rawmarsh Community School last year, has pledged to stand as “a workers’ MP on a worker’s wage”.
Meanwhile the Middlesbrough by-election, to be held on the same day, will be contested by John Malcolm, secretary of the Tees, Esk and Wear Valley Health Unison branch.
