The public inquiry into the 2005 police shooting of Azelle Rodney heard from two expert witness firearms officers from Northern Ireland last week.

Gary Gracey and Andrew Mawhinney said that the way the Metropolitan Police ran the operation made the shooting “almost inevitable”.

An officer, known only as E7, shot Azelle dead in north London in 2005 as he travelled in the back of a car.

The expert witnesses said that the operation would have been much safer if Azelle and the two others had been intercepted before they began driving.

The inquiry has now closed its oral evidence sessions. The evidence will be summed up in a hearing on 17 December. The chair is expected to return recommendations based on the evidence early next year.
