Two lively protests against plans to close local swimming pools took place in south Manchester last Saturday.
More than 500 people marched in Levenshulme, including Labour MP Gerald Kaufman and several councillors who have pledged to vote against the cut. One banner demanded “Labour councillors show some guts—vote against the Tory cuts.”
And hundreds turned out to a flashmob at Withington baths, also marked for closure in March. Many protesters came kitted out in their swimming costumes.
Leading trade unionists including Unite general secretary Len McCluskey have signed their petition for Labour councillors to vote against the cuts.
The council has marked five pools for closure, as well as Levenshulme’s library.
