Drivers protest and vote to strike over redundancies

Delivery drivers for Howdens joinery and kitchens in Widnes, near Liverpool, have voted to strike against plans to close their depot.

They also protested at Howdens sites around the north west of England last week.

Some believe the closure is an attempt to break the union and outsource the jobs to Yorkshire. The workers are members of the Unite union employed by DHL.

They were given 30 days warning of the plans—barely enough time to ballot and give notice under the anti-union laws. But 47 of the 48 workers who voted, wanted to strike.
