Department for Transport strike on hold after bosses agree to talks over job cuts

Department for Transport workers in the PCS union called off their strike last Friday after the government agreed to talks.

The strike was timed to coincide with the sending out of 90 day notices to staff, warning them of compulsory redundancies.

The government agreed that those notices would not be sent out and that they would enter into talks with the union about this and other issues including sick pay.

The union has been trying to get government representatives around the table for months, so this move is progress.

Paul Williams from the union’s group executive in the department spoke to Socialist Worker in a personal capacity.

“They’ve withdrawn 90 day notices for over 200 workers but the fight is far from over, he said.

“We’ve only agreed to call off this strike. We have a mandate for further action and we’ll call it if the talks aren’t fruitful.”
