Elections are underway in the lecturers’ UCU union. The UCU Left group, which Socialist Worker supporters are part of, is standing several candidates for national officer and national executive committee positions.
The elections come at an important time for the union. UCU general secretary Sally Hunt is proposing a number of changes to the union’s structures, citing a financial crisis.
They include moving from an annual to a bi-annual congress and cuts to other sectional conferences.
The proposed changes would make it harder for ordinary union members to shape the union.
They would also shift the union from a campaigning organisation to one
that simply provides services to members.
UCU Left candidates are opposed to the planned changes.
They are campaigning for a fighting union that can take on the government’s continuing assault on education.
The elections end on 1 March.
