Vote Left in UCU elections

Elections have begun in the lecturers’ UCU union for national officer and national executive committee positions.

Members of the UCU Left, which Socialist Worker supports, are standing in the elections. UCU Left candidate Liz Lawrence is standing for vice president.

She told Socialist Worker, “We need to build a campaigning union which recruits members because it is taking action to defend education, jobs, pay and pensions.

“We should reject the view that workers should pay with their living standards for the failures of the banks.

“This election is also about union governance and democracy.

“The UCU constitution provides for the sovereignty of annual congress and for decision-making via democratic debates at branch and regional meetings.

“There are some in the union who would seek to over-rule congress decisions. There is a role for consultation exercises but consultation is not necessarily democracy.

A vote for the UCU Left candidates is a vote for a fight back against austerity and the building of a democratic union.”
