London Metropolitan University workers stand up to victimisation

by Elspeth May

University workers, students and other trade unionists lobbied management at London Metropolitan University yesterday, Wednesday, to defend two suspended workers.

The university has suspended Max Watson, chair of the Unison union at London Met, and Jawad Botmeh, the elected staff governor. It says it is investigating a 'serious matter of concern'.

Workers say they have not been given clear reasons for the suspensions.

Max and Jawad are well known trade unionists on campus. They have been central to the campaigns launched to protect services at London Met from privatisation.

Management threatened to derecognise Unison at London Met some weeks ago. The suspensions are the latest in a series of escalating attacks on unions.

Unison and UCU union members at yesterday's lobby spoke of how they were disgusted at management's intimidation and victimisation of two trusted, respected and militant trade unionists.

Local Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn has written a letter of support to the union branch and encourages others to do the same.
