TUC calls rally over Osborne’s budget

The TUC has booked a 1,600 seat venue in central London for a rally in the run-up to George Osborne’s budget next month.

The focus will be on the squeeze on living standards from pay cuts and freezes, rising prices, public service cuts, benefit cuts and unemployment.

Get there early, as it is expected to fill up quickly.

London march for Kurdish freedom

Over 1,500 Kurdish people and their supporters marched in North London on Sunday of last week.

They demand freedom for their leader, Abdullah Ocalan, imprisoned in solitary confinement in Turkey exactly 14 years ago.

Some 8,000 Kurdish political prisoners remain in Turkish prisons, including journalists and lawyers.


Cleaners strike to derail poverty pay

Train cleaners working for Churchill on the Tyne and Wear metro began a seven-day strike on Friday of last week.

They are striking against poverty pay and over their conditions. This follows a 72-hour strike in December.

Churchill cleaners on Arriva Trains Wales are also balloting for strikes.

They haven’t had a pay rise in two years, and have been told they won’t have one this year unless they agree to job cuts.


Overtime ban on Orkney Ferries

Workers on Orkney Ferries in the RMT union began an indefinite overtime ban on Wednesday of last week over pay and conditions.

Ferry workers in the Nautilus International union are also balloting for strikes. Their ballot ends on Wednesday of this week.

Orkney Ferries also employs workers in the Unite union.


Leeds convention against the cuts

Around 70 people came to the Leeds Against Cuts convention on Saturday of last week.

It was supported by local unions, trades councils, benefits campaigns and Keep Our NHS public.

Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, authors of The Spirit Level, gave the opening address.

A speaker from the Mid Yorkshire hospital strike spoke about their struggle.
